Below are answers to the questions members ask most often. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, reach out through the app or check the relevant section of the docs.
GPS verification requires you to be physically at your home address when you tap Verify with GPS. The platform must detect you within 1 mile of the address on file.Common causes of failure:
  • Location permission denied — open your browser or device settings and allow location access for the site, then try again.
  • You’re not at home — GPS verification only works from your home. You cannot verify remotely.
  • Address entered incorrectly — double-check that your street address, city, and state are correct. Use the autocomplete field to pick a confirmed address.
  • Indoor GPS drift — GPS accuracy varies indoors. Try moving closer to a window or stepping outside briefly.
  • Address is locked — once verified, your address is locked for 30 days. If you need to change it before the lock expires, use the Unverify to edit option after the lock period ends.
If your address was recently verified and the lock hasn’t expired, you don’t need to verify again — your address is already confirmed.
When you request to join a game, the host reviews your request and either approves or declines it. There is no automatic approval — every join request goes to the host.
  • Approved players are notified and gain access to the full game detail, including the host’s address (if hidden until approval).
  • Declined players are removed from the list and do not see the address.
  • If the game is full when you request, you are placed on the waitlist automatically.
How quickly the host responds depends on them. If you haven’t heard back and the game is soon, check whether you’re on the waitlist or try a different game.
If the host cancels a game, all approved and waitlisted players are notified via the platform (and by push notification or SMS if you’ve enabled those). Your spot is released and you are free to join other games.Hosts should cancel as early as possible so players can make other plans. Repeated last-minute cancellations by a host may affect their reputation and standing in the community. If you’re an approved player and need to cancel your own spot, do so as early as possible — ideally at least 24 hours in advance — so the host can offer the spot to someone on the waitlist.
Private games are invite-only sessions that do not appear in the public game feed. To join a private game you need either:
  • A join code shared directly by the host, or
  • A shareable link the host sends you.
Entering the join code or clicking the link takes you directly to the game detail page where you can request to join. The host still approves all requests — a join code gets you to the game page, it does not guarantee approval.
Some hosts charge a small fee to cover venue costs, equipment, or supplies. Witt & Play does not process payments — instead, hosts can add their Venmo username or Cash App $cashtag to their Settings page.Once you are an approved player in a game, you can see the host’s payment handles on the game detail page and send payment directly through those apps. Always confirm the reimbursement amount and method with the host before the game.
Witt & Play does not guarantee or arbitrate payment disputes. Reimbursements are a direct agreement between you and the host.
If you don’t see games in your area, you have a few options:
  • Host your own — create a game listing for a sport you enjoy. Other members searching nearby will find it.
  • Expand your radius — adjust your preferred search radius in your preferences to include a broader area.
  • Check back often — new games are posted regularly. The game feed updates in real time.
  • Opt in to the new-members spotlight — toggling Feature me on the new-members page on your profile helps nearby members find you and may prompt someone to host a game for your shared interests.
Hosts can schedule a game to repeat on a set interval — weekly, every two weeks, or monthly. Each occurrence is a separate session with its own roster and chat. You must RSVP to each session individually; approval for one session does not carry over to others.Check the game detail page to see whether a game is a one-time event or part of a recurring series.
If a game has reached its player limit when you request to join, you are added to the waitlist automatically. When an approved player leaves, the platform automatically promotes the next person on the waitlist and sends them a notification.Waitlist spots are time-sensitive — when you receive a waitlist invite, you have a limited window to claim the spot before it passes to the next person.
The Restricted badge appears when the platform calculates that the date of birth on your profile indicates you are under 18. Restricted accounts cannot host or join games. If your date of birth was entered incorrectly:
  1. Go to My profile.
  2. If your date of birth is not yet verified and locked, you can update it using the date picker.
  3. If your date of birth is already verified and locked, contact Witt & Play support to have it corrected — you cannot change a verified date of birth yourself.
Once your date of birth is corrected and you are confirmed as 18 or older, the restriction is lifted.
Open the game detail page for the relevant game and look for the Report button. This opens the ReportDialog where you:
  1. Select a reason (harassment, unsafe behavior, no-show, cheating, hate speech, inappropriate content, or other).
  2. Optionally add up to 1,000 characters of detail describing what happened.
  3. Submit the report.
Reports are private and reviewed by the Witt & Play team. You will not be identified to the person you reported. Submitting a report in bad faith is itself a code of conduct violation. If you are reporting a serious safety issue — assault, threats, or immediate danger — contact local emergency services first.
